Finally We Can Find Our Android Phones

We are all aware of the Find my iPhone feature and the app on iOS devices, and Android users were dying for Google to come out with their own feature but just couldn't wait, so we had to rely on other services such as Cerberus which you have to pay for a subscription if I am not mistaken unless you are one of those lucky people who got a deal when they were having free subscriptions or Android Lost which I believe is completely free.

However Google has turn the tides and sort of dropped a bombshell on us. They are now coming out with their own feature called Android Device Manager. This is something to think about as it will be definitely neat and the best thing is that it does not only work on Android 4.2+ devices but rather Android devices from 2.2 and up. So if you are users of Android devices that are old or are not on 4.2 and above, you need not worry as you are taken care of.

More from the Official Android Blog

There seems to be another surprise where users are reporting that their devices are having the Android Device Manager showing up on their phone but it seems that the service is not live yet. Google did claim that the service for "find my phone" will be live later on this month but we all are eagerly awaiting it. Are you?

The only one thing that does concern me is that for in order the Android Device Manager service to find your phone, you must have one or two of the following enabled: GPS, WiFi or mobile data. The latter if turned off will most likely not be able to detect your phone but of course once it does roll out officially, testing can be done to see how this pans up with other services such as the aforementioned Cerberus or Android Lost.

My Nexus 4 actually surprisingly received the Android Device Manager. To check to see if your phone has received it yet or not, go to Settings, then Security, then click on Device Administrators and finally you will see Android Device Manager or not. As per the screenshot on my device:

I will update this thread once the service becomes official. Stay tuned!
